I don't suppose it matters since I've already filed, but the software kept my "wrong" answers, even though I instructed it not to save this version. After filing both federal and state, I went back to the software and entered data for 2015 as if I were single. I dropped TurboTax and switched to H&R Block downloaded from Amazon, but I'm a bit disappointed. Looks like current price on Amazon is $44.99, so it seems to vary a little in price at different times.
I bought the 2015 TurboTax Deluxe + State + Federal eFile (Disk version, with no state eFile incl.) from Amazon at the end of January 2016 for $39.85. One minor complaint with TT is that sometimes when you want to review a particular topic or remove detail entered for something not applicable, TT will unnecessarily cycle you back through a round of interview questions you have already answered. Although I completed my taxes for 2014 on H&R Block without any real problems, I definitely still prefer TurboTax. I used H&R Block last year because I got a great deal and I thought I would need the pricey Premier TurboTax. It even asked me if I needed to adjust the cost basis from the 1099-B, which I needed to do, since the 1099-B did not correctly adjust for the discount purchase price of the stock. I was concerned whether TurboTax Deluxe (2015 version) could handle some ESPP sales made in 2015, but it did just fine.

I'm not sure if this is the problem though, because this issue was reported back in December before Microsoft started complaining about SHA1 certs.Īnyhow, the only options are to blindly trust that the unknown publisher is really Intuit and the install package hasn't been tampered with or wait for intuit to fix the problem before filing your taxes. Apparently, as of January 1st, SHA1 certs are considered invalid by Microsoft due to concerns about vulnerabilities in the SHA1 hash algorithm.
I'm not exactly sure why they have you check the signature of the installer since the complaint is about a specific install package, but when I checked the installer signature, I noticed its cert was an SHA1 cert.

This usually means that the update package doesn't have a valid digital signature and its integrity can't be guaranteed. When I try to install updates, I get a privilege escalation prompt with the publisher listed as unknown. The problem is that their update process seems to use unsigned or incorrectly signed installation packages. It looks like Intuit has fumbled once again with this year's Turbo Tax release.
